British Infantry Stages Raid on Historic Duportail House from 1777 Philadelphia Campaign as Part of Weekend Reenactment
A detachment of reenactors from the British 40th Regiment of Foot recreated a raid at the Historic Duportail House on Sunday, September 20, as part of a weekend encampment at Teegarden Park in Tredyffrin Township. The recreated scene was drawn from accounts of an actual raid that occurred in September 1777 as part of British General William Howe’s occupation of Philadelphia.
Onlookers watched as the raid played out in real-time on the Duportail House campus at 297 Adams Drive in Chesterbrook. The regimental unit included an officer, non-commissioned officer and three soldiers, who searched the House and adjacent Federal Barn for foodstuffs and other goods. Volunteers from the Tredyffrin Heritage Center at Duportail performed the roles of the Havard family who occupied the House in 1777.
